Pre Puppy Class - First Day

Posted on in Obedience

Today we went to Moorabbin Obedience Dog Club for pre puppy class. The class is for all puppies that have not had all their immunizations so they can be well socialized with other puppies. Typically the puppies are between 10-14 weeks old, but the great thing I found was they had older dogs there also, so there were all different shapes and sizes.

To start with Java was apprehensive and didn’t really want to play with any of the other puppies. She just sat in a corner of the room for a while (not long only 5 minutes or so) and then she was off exploring. The first stop was the office. The pigs ears and liver treats were too much for her to resist! Forget the other puppies she has found gold! Mark kept running after her and bringing her back to the circle of pups but she would just pick herself up and walk right back to the GOLD ROOM! In the end Sue closed the door so she wouldn’t be tempted any longer.

It took her around 30 minutes to get a bit more comfortable with the other pups and larger dogs in the room. There was an Australian bull dog called Slug , a Cavalier called Buddy, Vince the Samoyed and some other breeds that I really couldn’t work out what they were!

Java was milling around playing with the toys and the finally met Vince, the Samoyed. Vince had been to class for a few weeks but was still scared of all the other dogs. But it was like magic! They played and threw each other on the ground for a good 30 minutes! I am sure Java thought Vince was a big white sheep, she rounded him up and kept biting Vince on the rear end; I just smiled and kept it to myself! She has so much energy, and kept motoring through the 2 hours we were there!

Here comes Java!

Posted on in Blogs

Well it seemed like it took for ever but i picked Java up from Broadford on Monday!

Jaz from Hillcrest WorkingDogs looked after her over night and she was totally relaxed and full of beans, she had another pup with her from the Minnie litter and also beautiful Charm who was another Bauers Border Collie pup from Lucy. So Java had another 1 1/2 hour trip, to do until we got back to Glen Waverley. The good thing.. she doesnt get car sick! (yet!)

She was so full of energy when we got home and really confident which is fantastic! She strutted around like she owned the place. Mark and her played for most of the afternoon and then Robyn, Jacko, Morgan and Logan came over. It was great to see how excited she was to play with the kids, again really confident and just wanted to play ... however, she was a little rough with those pin sharp teeth! :-)

We had been working on her dog run during the week so she can sleep in the laundry and has a dog door going outside into her run. The first night it was getting a little late and i thought i would introduce her to the dog door quickly, not really expecting her to use it. When i woke up in the morning i was waiting for a disaster... (oh did i mention her record is peeing 5 times and one poop in 15 minutes? How the hell can you keep up wiht that?) i looked around and nothing! Perhaps all the accidents we had in the house was all she had left? I went outside to put her on the lawn only to find that she had indeed figured out how to use the doggie door! Unbelievable! I was so happy i didnt wake up to a mess inside!

Tuesday we played all day. I put Java on a lead and took her out the front yard so she could get used to a lead and check out the surroundings. She was so intreged by the cars. Bit scared but after around 20min she was feeling quiet ok with the whole thing. Then i had a visitor come. I put Java back in her run and sat and had a coffee and a chat. Then there was a knock at the door. I thought it was a sales man so hesitated to answer it. Thank god i did.

Happy 5th Birthday Sasha!

Posted on in Blogs

I can’t believe 5 years has gone by so quickly!

When I first saw photos of Sasha as a pup I thought she was the ugliest Border collie I had seen! I didn’t like the uneven markings. The last thing I thought of was to take a puppy home with me when I went up visiting in Queensland; I already had two dogs at home and the last thing I needed was another pup... or was it?!

We have had heaps of fun together! And Sasha's enthusiasm always makes you want to teach her other things. She may not be the prettiest dog but she is the smartest I have had!

Hopefully we can have plenty more years together!

Love your guts! xxx

Brian White Workshop

Posted on in Herding

Brian comes from rural Ireland where he works as a professional Shepherd and has been training working dogs since the age of 12 years. Brian has worked and trained with some of the top handlers in Ireland and the UK.

The workshop went over 2 days and was hosted by Driving Force Working Sheepdog Club, Victoria.

We had to be at Freshwater Creek by 8.30am that meant for me a 5am wakeup call! When i arrived I was surprised at how many sheep were on the property! I had never seen so many sheep. Typically when we worked sheep we would only have a few in the yard, there were hundreds on this property! There were around 10 of us at the workshop, Kelpies, border collies; oh and one Coolie!
:-)

We started off in the small yard so he could establish the level that everyone was at. Some of the attendees were farmers and others were city slickers who only trained once in a blue moon (Sasha and I)
I was really excited! I stopped taking Sasha herding once i found out she had HD; so it had been around 2 years since she has seen sheep. She went in too hard and got chastised but the second round she was great!

She started to settle down and just work the sheep and not appear to be too anxious. Unfortunately that afternoon she started limping so we finished up pretty quick.

Dinner was great we all sat on the veranda chatting and had a great BBQ! Glenn was the star of the show and was the only one who could get the gas fitting attached to the bottle! So we ate well!

We camped out at the farm. It was a really quite a warm night. Yvette got the camp fire going and i was on my last apple cider when it was time for bed. I thought it would be really nice lying back in the van, watching the camp fire flicker in the night, but the girls turned into fire-fighters and there was an almighty HISSSSSS as they poured water all over the fire! I couldn’t believe it! :-)
